Kerrang have interviewed Tom about AVA's upcoming releases this year.

How's the new album sounding?
Tom DeLonge (vocals/guitar): "It's sounding great and we're very excited that we were able to achieve something with the record and the film that's pretty different than we've done in the past. It was a lot more challenging but it also freed us to be more ambitious than we ever have. The songs are more like compositions than the more traditional songs that we've done in the past. It's really something that everyone involved is really excited about."

The movie started as a documentary on the making of your debut, We Don't Need To Whisper. How did it evolve into its present form?
"Ever since we started we knew we wanted to do a film. We started the documentary first and got some interesting stuff and then we started filming things with a mind to blending things between the documentary and the movie. Then finally, it became a lot more story-based and we split the projects up. We started filming all the different scenes and vignettes that would go into the story line and it started coming out really well. We started getting excited about all the different possibilities that we had to expand on the meaning and the philosophy of our band."

Do the album and the movie work as stand alone pieces or do they have to be experienced together?
"You can listen to the album without watching the movie but they're meant to be combined. The music isn't placed in the film in a chronological order - a lot of people have referenced Pink Floyd's The Wall but it's not quite the same because with The Wall the film directly follows the record. With Love, the music is not necessarily the main character or the main focus of the film, it's symbiotic. The reason we did it that way was to let everyone know that Angels & Airwaves are as interested in cinema as we are in music. We're a band that want to apply our art across a lot of different mediums so we're not stuck on one thing. Even though we've done a couple of albums already, who knows what we'll do in the future."

What were the lyrical inspirations for this album?
"Lyrically, the songs reflect the movie. The whole album is called Love, the movie is called Love. Basically what we're trying to do is tackle all the different meanings of that word and all that it implies in various contexts."

The release date was originally scheduled for December but it was put back to Valentine's Day. That's pretty apt...
"There was no way when I was on tour with Blink that I was gonna be able to have it all ready for Christmas. It makes a lot of sense with the name of the album for it to come out in February. The movie will be premiering when the album comes out in February 14 but it won't really come out in theatres until our tour in the spring. We're trying to get all the fine details figured out right now. It's been a lot more work finishing the editing and the special effects and everything than with a regular album. It's exciting but now I know why no-one actually ever does anything like this - it's a lot of hard work!"

And the album will be free to download, won't it?
"The entire album is free. Starting from February 14 we're gonna have the entire album up for anybody to download and it's actually taken a lot of stress off my back. Usually you're so worried about material leaking or whatever but no I don't really care what slips out and I'm giving it away hoping that I'll far surpass what I ever could have sold."
