Blink-182 to Tour with My Chemical Romance

With a comeback album slated to be released later this year, pop-punk vets Blink-182 will hit the road for a mammoth summer tour — and they've enlisted plenty of A-list help for the 40-date trek, which kicks off August 5 in Holmdel, NJ, and wraps up on October 15 in San Diego, CA. My Chemical Romance will join Blink-182 for the entire string of dates, while Rancid, Manchester Orchestra, and Matt and Kim will sign on for select stops. Check out complete dates here.

"These are our biggest shows yet," Blink's singer-guitarist Tom DeLonge tells SPIN. "Our last [reunion] tour was by far the biggest thing we've ever done and I think our new record warrants the growth of the band. You know, we've achieved so much more than we've ever imagined, so even if, like, three people show up for the shows, we'll say, 'Wow, that was quite a ride.'"

DeLonge says the band will be debuting new material at each date and that Blink's songs have a "stadium rock sensibility." "I don't want to spit out song titles, but the new stuff builds a lot more. The songs have intros, crescendos, and things that lend themselves to great lighting and loud volume. It's not orthodox punk at all."

Before reuniting in 2008, DeLonge, singer-bassist Mark Hoppus, and drummer Travis Barker focused on side-projects. DeLonge recorded albums with Angels and Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker teamed up for +44. The time apart helped them discover new musical influences, which have inspired the band's bold, arena-ready sound. "We have different skill-sets," says DeLonge. "Travis is the only guy that can play crazy hip-hop beats but he can also play faster than Slayer. And Mark is the indie rock king. We have a really great mix of our three talents, and what I'm really excited about is how these songs are built for such massive venues."

Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance have announced they will be teaming up for this year’s Honda Civic Tour, which kicks off on August 5th in Holmdel, NJ and winds down on October 15th in San Diego. We caught up with both bands at the kick-off party for the tour announcement last night at Los Angeles’ Rainbow Room and got the inside scoop on the tour. We also have confirmed the status of blink-182’s highly anticipated new album, which will officially be out this fall.

“We’ll be turning it in before the tour starts so it’s out during the tour,” blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus says of the band’s first album in eight years. “With a single and video before that. We have 16 songs we worked from. I think we’ve narrowed those down to like 12. And we’ll probably put 10 on the album. I think that it’s most like our last record, but taking a step forward from that and also kind of keeping track of where we started.”

As for what fans can expect from the album? “I think we’ve done a really great job of separating our record into sections where some stuff is throwback and some stuff is very progressive and some stuff is just plain different,” guitarist Tom DeLonge says. “One of the things I’m really proud of about this record is a lot of songs are really built for a big audience. Even the ones that are a throwback. One of the ones we just did the other day was actually spawned from a swing beat by (drummer) Travis (Barker). It’s literally a futuristic version of the Adam and the Ants song everyone would reference. We took it to a place where it would remind you of old blink on something totally new. My point is it’s a progressive throwback that’s built for a large audience so it’s exciting.”

The tour, which will feature several openers including Matt & Kim, Rancid and Manchester Orchestra, will apparently involve big production and lots of excitement. “I think the bands playing on this bill are all really really good,” DeLonge says. “I think that’s it’s going to be really big and fun. Honda’s really cool and they’re bringing a lot to the table as far as promotion. They’re helping out with some of the promotion even so I think this will give the opportunity to all the bands involved to hopefully put on more of a fantastic show than usual. I think you can pretty much bet our crowd and the crowd of the fans of all the other bands are going to get a pretty fast-paced, energetic peaceful rebellion. I’m going to try and lose a few pounds and try and look a little bit better. That’s what you can count on.”

The tour will also involve some new songs– but not too many. “I think people still want to hear the songs we’ve always been playing and I think they want to hear a few new songs,” Hoppus says of the band’s setlist. “We’ll have a healthy balance of both. As a fan one of the worst things I can hear from a band I’m going to see is ‘We’re going to play some new stuff now.’”

My Chemical Romance, who’ve never toured with blink-182, are equally excited for the trek. “We haven’t played with them,” MCR guitarist Frank Iero says. “But I did wear a blink-182 shirt to my freshman orientation in high school so I’m really excited. It’s a big deal. It’s full circle.”

“We’ve been friends with these guys throughout the years so it’s nice to finally get together,” guitarist Ray Toro adds. “We talked about touring a couple years ago and it didn’t work out but now it did.”

In Today's Fuse Noise... On Monday night, Blink 182 and My Chemical Romance announced that they will be headlining the 10th Anniversary of the first Honda Civic Tour together, also headlined by Blink 182.
