- Travis Barker: Living With Luck and Banging Up Life!
JAM Magazine Speaks With The Experimental Percussionist
By David Huff
Travis Barker knows all about luck. It's been a constant companion his whole life, whether he knew it or not. Unfortunately, it took a tragic accident for him to fully realize just how blessed he is to have the invisible talisman on his side. Then again, over the past 35 years, there have been numerous signs along the way to indicate there was something special about the musician.
Over the years, the father of two has experimented with just about every style of drumming he could think of. Those forays into sound have led to numerous musical adventures almost all percussionists would find a bit too unorthodox, let alone challenging, to ever contemplate doing. Not this California native. Over the past few years, he has established himself as a drummer's drummer. He's produced and made guest appearances on numerous music projects over the years. Along the way, the former Baron Von Tito has even found time to add mix master to his vast repertoire of skills. The past several years has also seen the talented artist gain significant prominence within the tight-knit hip-hop community. Rap artists often call on his versatile talent to help incorporate rock-tinged remixes to their songs.
This past month, the musician released his first solo album, an emotional endeavor he called Give the Drummer Some. Before finishing album work on his newly constituted day job, Blink-182, the versatile artist is on tour promoting his new disc with Lil' Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross through the end of April. He's opening the show with friend Mixmaster Mike, one of the foremost hip-hop turntablist's in the world. With that said, it's time to "Meet the Barker."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JAM: Outside of Phil Collins, I can honestly say you are the most impressive drummer I've ever come across. Your forays into different styles of drumming, whether it's rock, hip hop, country or jazz, have been quite remarkable. At what point in your past did you realize the drum could be more than just a companion piece for the bass?
Travis Barker - It started when I was really young. My pops would have me listen to everything from heavy metal to country. He challenged me growing up to play all types of music, and I did. I found jazz and loved it. I discovered things in Buck Owens and Johnny Cash I enjoyed. Over the years, I found a little bit in each musical genre that I liked, and I would incorporate the style into my playing.
JAM: You spent a lot of time over the past several years with Adam Goldstein, otherwise known as DJ A.M.
When Blink broke up six years ago, and my other band Transplant went on hiatus, I had this idea of doing this deejay thing with DJ A.M. It was going to be my first step into utilizing the drums without a band, without a guitar player. In a way, A.M. was my guitar player to jam with. He would hit me with all genres of music on the turntable that most guitar players couldn't even play. We spent four years together. During that time, I also concentrated on doing remixes and was asked to drum on projects with Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Too $hort, Jaime Foxx and T.I. These amazing opportunities would have never come my way had I not worked with DJ A.M., or still been in a rock band.
JAM: I always thought drumming was a misunderstood art form. However, you've gone beyond the call of duty to show the world that the sounds emanating from the instrument can indeed be considered artful.
Traditionally, when a drummer comes out with a drum album it sounds like progressive rock with massive sounds and time signatures. It's like, how many notes can I put in this two bar fill? I didn't want to make that kind of record. My assistant Chris (Baker), who died in the plane crash, is the one who really encouraged me to pursue the music you hear on the album. He ate, slept and breathed hip-hop; and he loved the idea of mixing live drum beats of the music to scratched records. Charles, who also lost his life when the aircraft went down, believed I could produce an entire hip-hop album with almost all emcees and rappers. After I recovered from the accident, I was determined to finish the project as a tribute to them and DJ A.M. I also did this record for my fans that don't see music necessarily categorized into genres, they just like music.
JAM: Did Adam introduce you to the hip-hop world, or had you been a fan of the sound?
I've been into hip-hop since I was a kid. By the time I was listening to Van Halen's 1984 album, I was also listening to Run DMC. I loved both kinds of music. In the beginning, hip-hop music had no drummers. The beats were all done by a drum machine. I was doing my thing with Adam when all these opportunities to remix hip-hop music came my way. He's the one that really turned me on to electronic music more than rap. A lot of people don't know he was in the rock group Crazy Town, where he manned the turntables. Adam grew up rooted in hip-hop. It's all he listened to. He could recite rap songs verbatim.
JAM: Have Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus embraced this part of your creativity, and do you see it helping reinvent the Blink-182 sound on its next album due out this summer?
Mark and Tom have given me a tremendous amount of freedom on this new record. When it comes to the point in a song where Tom would normally do a guitar solo, he'll say, "Travis, do whatever you want to here." I don't know if these drum arrangements will survive the final mix, we'll just have to see how they fit into the overall song. Since we got back together, I give Mark and Tom a lot of credit for opening up to let me do more things on these new Blink songs.
JAM: Tom made a statement about Blink-182 I found quite interesting. He said, "If the accident hadn't of happened, we wouldn't be a band today." Is that true?
I absolutely think that statement is true. Before my plane crash, I had no intention of playing in Blink again. Mark Hoppus has always been like a brother to me. Even when we broke up, Mark and I were in a band together for a short time. Tom did his thing. A week before my plane crash, DJ A.M. and I were the house group for the MTV Music Awards. For two guys who had the crazy idea of putting a drummer and deejay together, it was an epic moment for us to be there. We were accomplishing so much and feeling good about what we were doing, that's where the title of Give the Drummer Some comes from. There was no Blink-182 in my life and I hadn't missed it at all the six years I was away from the group.
JAM: And then you board a private jet on September 19, 2008.
Yes, it changed my life forever. I remember while I was in the hospital, I received a handwritten letter from Tom. It really threw me off guard. I was even more surprised to find out he'd been calling to get updates on how I was doing. During the process of me recovering and healing from the plane crash, Tom paid a visit. He told me he would really like to get the band back together. None of us could come up with a really good, valid reason the group had broken up. My near death experience had shown all of us that life is short. There was no reason the three of us shouldn't get back together to play music again.
JAM: You really had moved on from the whole Blink-182 experience.
Seriously, I had no intention of ever playing in Blink again. If it wasn't for my crash, I really don't see the three of us reuniting. We would all be holding onto our pride, whatever, unwilling to concede someone had made a mistake.
JAM: Looking back today, was it necessary for Blink to go on hiatus to recharge its creative batteries?
Yes, at the time everything happened, Mark and I wanted to tour non-stop, Tom did not. We had a year of non-stop work, and miscommunication, which led to us becoming a dysfunctional band if you will. There was no big issue we broke up over. There was no fallout, no one betrayed. We were overworked and didn't have a grasp on things. When we did reunite after my crash, we all talked about what happened, and no one could come up with an answer. There was no big problem to get resolved other than spending way too much time on the road. We just needed to think things through clearly and air out whatever issues we might have, and that wasn't many.
JAM: Do you understand Tom wanting to be a family man? After all, you were had children of your own at the time of the break-up.
Listen, I understand Tom's desire to be around his family. At the time, he only had one child, I had three young children. If anyone ever understood the idea of a family man, I most certainly did. For me, I equated going out on the road with supporting my family. That's why I never tripped out about touring because I knew I was away from my kids for the right reasons. I was gone because I was playing music and that supports my family. My life has always been centered around the children. That bond helped me recover from my accident. In fact, my kids were with me the first three and a half weeks of the tour, so that's always my priority - over music, over anything.
JAM: I was exhausted reading about your colorful life the past eight years. I can't even imagine actually living it. I don't know whether to simply congratulate you, or put you on a pedestal for surviving it all.
Thank you man! Fortunately, the key to my recovery was right under my nose - the kids. I honestly couldn't have made it through all this without my family support system. They always kept me strong. Going through a big traumatic event like I did, I needed their strength to help me recover from the numerous operations I was going to have. I needed help to wean me off the serious amounts of medication I was receiving. Knowing my children were there gave me the will to live. I was also fortunate to have the most powerful medicine in the world - music - as therapy to help me get well too.
JAM: You survived most people's greatest fear, a plane crash. Music and family helped you overcome an unbelievable trauma. Have you been able to put the mental aspect of the experience into perspective so you don't have to be reminded of that day over and over again?
Unfortunately our brains are like hard drives. However bad you don't want to remember certain events, you always will. The accident is something I'll never forget. I wish I could erase it from my memory, but I can't. Right now, I stay away from flying. I'm not ready to do it just yet. I try to keep a positive spin on any flashbacks that may occur. I like to think I'm alive today for a reason. Yes, I think of the brothers I lost due to the crash, but I have to stay positive not only for me, but for the sake of my family. I was in the hospital for three and a half months. I have had 16 surgeries. When I was released from the hospital, I traveled with my family from Georgia to California on a bus. Once I was safely home, I was afraid to leave. At one point, I was on multiple medications and a totally different person from the one you are talking to today. There was a trauma doctor I spoke to on a regular basis. I dealt with post-traumatic syndrome for quite a while. In fact, I still do from time to time. I don't like going fast in a car anymore. I don't particularly like being in a bus at night. My lifestyle has slowed down quite a bit since the crash. Fortunately, I have music I can throw myself into. The drums are a great way to release emotion.
JAM: Can you take lessons you've learned about yourself after the accident and impart that wisdom to your children?
Absolutely! I've learned a lot about myself and life in general. I'm not a huge religious person, but here's the thing. I've come to understand that God throws curves at certain people, because he knows they can survive the trauma, and take the wisdom from that incident to help others. Life is crazy. One minute you're here and things are going smooth, the next, chaos is erupting all around you. I try to teach my kids that nothing is guaranteed in life. I have learned a lot of lessons about myself from that experience as well.
JAM: You and Adam survived a life altering experience. The medical examiner says an accidental overdose killed him in 2009. Do you know what really happened to DJ A.M.?
No I don't, I only wish I'd been there. Adam and I had talked right before we played the last Blink show in Las Vegas. We had met up in New York two weeks before he passed away and we were always talking through emails. The way his death has been explained, it just doesn't sound like the Adam I know.
JAM: Between the Blink-182 tour last year and your numerous surgeries, where did you find the time to physically record 16 tracks for your album?
When we were on the road, a lot of the times I worked in a studio we had in the back of our tour bus. Any time before sound check and show time, I would have a Pro Tools rig set up in my dressing room, and a drum kit. I would start with a drum beat, then I'd start messing around with keyboard sounds, samples or guitar riffs, and that's how I worked on the album.
JAM: Did Mark and Tom understand what you were doing?
Yeah, they sort of got in to it. Like I said, this project started before my plane crash. Blink wasn't together then. This was a priority for me, and they understood that. I was committed to this project, and I told Mark and Tom I had to do this. It was something they both knew I had to get it out of my system before I could work on our new album. I had started this record before Blink came back into my life, and I was determined to finish it regardless.
JAM: Now that your solo project is behind you, what's the deal with Blink-182's new album?
We'll have it out this summer. Tom, Mark and my self, we all share the same mindset when it comes to our music. We don't over analyze it. Whatever comes natural to us with a song, the first inclination, that's usually the best way for us to go. Rock and roll is at its best when it is spontaneous. There can come a point with a band where you start over thinking stuff. The next thing you know you've been in the studio for two years when you should have been finished in three months.
JAM: Lil' Wayne made a rock album and the hip-hop community severely criticized him for it. Did you ever talk to him about his experience with rock and roll?
I thought what Wayne did on that album, with his rap background, was pretty ground breaking work. Not many artists in his genre would have the balls to do what he did, besides Run DMC back in the day. Wayne was one of the first rappers out there to actually go out and learn the guitar. He studied rock, like Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, and all the other greats. I give him a lot of props for sticking to his guns, studying a genre he wasn't familiar with, then going for it. There are some very good tracks on that record.
JAM: Between surgery and rehab, I'm surprised you had the time to contribute to the project.
Actually, I never physically played on the record. I was supposed to, but I just had surgery on my left arm. It was numb and the doctors had to repair the ulnar nerve. One of the producers working on his album contacted me. He said Wayne wanted me to play on one of the songs, but I couldn't for obvious reasons. All I could offer were some live drum sessions I had recorded before the crash. I sent the tapes to the producer to check out and do whatever he wanted with them. He actually ended up using them on the song "One Way Trip."
JAM: Speaking of Led Zeppelin, I thought it was blasphemy for Mary J. Blige to do a remake of "Stairway to Heaven." I was even more dumbfounded that you played on the track. You should know better than anybody there are certain things sacred in rock and roll. One of them is "Stairway to Heaven." Seriously, did you have any reservations participating on the remake of that song?
Let me say this. When I hear about anyone remaking a Led Zeppelin song, the first thing that comes to my mind is, "What? Are you kidding me? Don't do it!" That's just the way rock people think. Before I agreed to come on board, I was shown an example of Mary singing this other Zeppelin song in ballad form. The only thing I would have done different was stick more to the original arrangement. But that said, I thought it was pretty cool what she did. Listen, I know what you're saying. Here's my thing. Mary J. Blige is a legend in her own right. After everything I've been through, I looked at my participation as something different for me to explore. I was all right with it because one, my kids got to see me play on American Idol, where Mary debuted the song, and two, it was definitely a change of pace for me.
JAM: The Guitar Center presents "Your Next Record with Travis Barker." Can you explain the promotion to me?
I'm leaving it open to anyone to participate. Any type of band, any type of music, emcees, vocalists, rap artists, it doesn't matter. Any one can enter by going to the Guitar Center website to find out what they have to do. After the Lil' Wayne tour ends in April, I will pick one group, or one artist, as the winner. I'll produce three of their songs and play on the record.
JAM: Speaking of the Lil' Wayne tour, exactly what kind of show do you do on stage?
Mixmaster Mike from the Beastie Boys is on stage as the deejay. He and I play a lot of the remixes I've done in the past, and from my album. The music will sound completely different than what you hear on the radio. It's basically us two battling it out.
JAM: Looking back, do you have mixed emotions about the reality show "Meet the Barkers," you did with now ex-wife Shanna Moakler? You filed papers six months after the lasted episode aired.
That's really a tough one, man. Fortunately for us, we did our reality show with some really good people. We had a deal where nothing would be aired unless it was approved by Shanna and my self. We didn't want them to fabricate a story, or storyline that wasn't real. But there is a tradeoff at the same time. Your family, and your personal life, is being aired for everyone to see. Sometimes, it's almost better if the shows are scripted, and some idiot is telling you to do this and do that, because then you are just acting. Nothing was funny or fake in our show.
JAM: Where you ready for it to end?
Yes. I wanted my family back. I did my season, had fun with it, but I couldn't sign on for more. MTV was cool with the decision. I told my wife at the time she could do other reality programs if she wanted to, but the kids were out of it. They were more important to me than some camera prying into our lives. Whatever anyone saw of me was cool, because that's who I am. But enough was enough.
